Facebook Evolution

This is how all my discussions about evolution and the Big Bang go on Facebook. I just can't imagine how in this day and age there are people who firmly believe the earth is six thousand years old and we are all created from dust.

New Portrait

I've been wanting to update my picture on Facebook for some time now and even though I have a Canon  Rebel T2i , every picture I take comes out looking like this.

Steve Jobs - 1955 to 2011

Steve Jobs one of the founders of Apple Computers and the innovator of the iPod and iPhone died yesterday at the age of 56.

This news has spread across the web, like a wildfire. Steve Wozniak Facbook page was flooded with condolences. I'm sure he's been overwhelmed with phone calls and emails asking for a response.

I feel kind of sorry for Woz. It wasn't like he and Jobs remained best friends. For a long time there was only room for one person in Jobs' life and that was Jobs.

Here's a quote from Steve Wozniak's Facebook page.

I am in shock and saddened. The phone is ringing constantly and I'm overwhelmed with email and there is only one of me. The bother of all this gets in the way if dealing with my own feelings, so please, I need time to myself.
My first computer was an Apple IIe. I had that computer for about ten years. Today I have a small Apple laptop and iPhone 3gs. The phone itself is a 1,000 times more powerful than my first computer.

Rest in peace Steve Jobs.

Winklevoss Twins Slam Summers Over 'A**hole' Insult

These dudes have ensured that nothing they do for the rest of their lives will be greater that what they are right now. And that is the humorous tragic irony here .. They are in essence a privileged, modern day Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.

Facebook Users DROP In U.S.: Millions Left The Social Network In May 2011

Facebook founders are a mostly Libertarians. I'm not saying there's anything wrong about being a Libertarian, but if you think about the tone of Facebook, its focus has a kind of narcissism about it. Facebook is about getting people to pay attention to you. It's not about building relationships, nor is it about focusing on establishing a community. It's all about look at me, see what I am doing and what I have accomplished. I think it's this feeling of competitiveness that promotes animosity and frustration.

If you consider the founding principle of Google is to "do no harm" and Apple is "We Create the Future We Want" and "Help People Create.", it's easy to see the stark differences to Facebook or even Microsoft. Not that there's anything wrong with having competitiveness and individuality as the focus of your product. It works great with Groupon.

However, I think after a while, the Libertarian model of Social Networking fails. People want more than just a place to brag, advertise or market their friends. This is essentially why Live Journal and MySpace failed. My prediction is that either Google or Apple will fill the spot after FB.

Facebook Goodbye.

Today I deactivated my Facebook account. And it feels good. It feels really good. Facebook was no longer enjoyable. I spent half my time arguing with people I barely knew. It felt like I was being more and more confined by the network. Facebook was defining me than the other way around.

Also FB was going to initiate a "dislike" button. Just what I need more judgmental friends and relatives. Not to mention all the stupid commercials and marketing that was pumped through each entry. Now Facebook is going to rent movies and download music .. It's all too much.

So, I am taking a break .. I'm thinking six months or so .. and if I still feel as positive as I do now. Then hopefully forever.

May 21, 2001 - The Rapture and Batman

With EIMB, I try to keep things pretty non-political or religious .. just concentrate on the fun stuff while the fun stuff lasts. However, the following was just too precious to pass up. I'm not so politically neutral on my Facebook page and I posted the following:
This Saturday - May 21st - is the Rapture. That's where Jesus comes down from the sky and raises all da good people to Him. Because I forgot to purchase a ticket and have a fear of being naked in front of strangers - I will not be going. However ... if anyone wants to join me .. I'll be spreading used pants, shirts, socks and shoes around the parking lot of churches .. just to freak out the Believers Sunday morning.
I guess this tweaked one of my religious FB friends who posted a serious reply .. but given the situation ..  kind of funny. So, I included a screen-cap here with names and faces blurred to protect the cynical and the religious.

 No disrespect to Batman.
Of course, all of the Christians are starting to back-track this story. Now they're saying that it marks the beginning of .. the beginning of the start of Judgement Day.

Cookie Monster SNL Audition Tape

Sesame Street's Cookie Monster is trying out to be a cast member of SNL. Watch the video and maybe you'll agree with me that he's better than Eddie Murphy.
