Lately I've been fascinated with Cargo Cults. During WWII, American and British military established airfields on Pacific islands where primitive natives tribes lived. The tribes had no knowledge of manufacturing and saw these wondrous giant birds that landed on their island and delivered gifts of food and technology. When the war ended, the troops left and so did the gifts. Years later, anthropologist discovered that some of these tribes had built elaborate airfields out of bamboo and coconuts to entice the gods back again. You can still see these bamboo control towers and hangers today.

I often wonder if we as Americans live in a sort of Cargo Cult. That what is happening around us is more sophisticated than we can understand. And that we assume certain things are true just by observation and perception. In fact, all of it is an intentional misinterpretation of reality.

Motivating Cats

Okay, I'm driving my daughter to school and this enormously fat, grey cat bounds across the street, in front of my bumper and then to the sidewalk on the other side. Of course I immediately stop and the cat is fine. But when I start up again the cat starts running beside me. If I slow down the cat slows down; If I speed up the cat speeds up ... So, I stop and the cat stops - just sitting there.

I need to be clear, the cat is on the sidewalk - at least two meters to the side and about four meters in front of my car. I am in no way chasing the cat. But I gotta get my kid to school - so I'm like screw it and speed the car up to about 15 mph and the cat takes off in front. And I figure the cat needs exercise and I need to get to get going; so it's kind of win / win right?

We (the cat and I) get to an intersection and I think the cat is going to take a hard right and go up the other street - nope - the cat crosses the street and continues running. ... block and block after block. For about 3/4 of a mile.

Let me stress that I am NOT chasing the cat .. I was kind of motivating the cat .. sorta .. did I mention the cat was really fat. So slowly the cat is losing ground to the car until finally it just stops - okay collapses on the sidewalk.

I'm not telling you this as some sort of confession. I don't feel guilty (okay I feel a little guilty and a bit shameful) .. I am telling you this because if for some reason in the middle of the night, if I am attacked by some mysterious creature and all the authorities find of me is bloody scraps .. y'all know who the real culprit is ..

Had a parent/teacher conference for my daughter who is in 5th grade. Sitting there, I was transported back to when I was in elementary school. I never fit in. I couldn't sit, listen or follow instructions. My brain has always been in constant rebellion. Fortunately, it's not a tool user and can't escape the confines of my skull. Why is it that for 12 years you're trained to be quiet and do exactly what you're told and then on the last day at graduation, they tell you to be independent and creative?

Somebody's Calling Me

I hate the phone. I mean I really hate the whole technology of telecommunication. I just want to take a bat and smash my phone into little tiny bits and then throw it down the garbage disposal along with a picture of Alexander Graham Bell.

The prefix that I live in must be very susceptible to telemarketers. Actually my neighborhood is quite diverse. I'm only one of three white guys. The rest are (in order of greatest number) Filipino, Chinese, Mexican, Hawaiian and Tongan. Everyone is very friendly and helpful and I can't seem to think of any of them being particularly gullible - unless it has to do with Spam (Hawaiians and Tongans are nuts for the canned meat).

Maybe I'm the target. Probably, it's because I signed up for a free vacation in 1987 and my name and number have been rotating through the infomercial cycle ever since.

I must receive at least fifteen calls a day from telemarketers. Usually, they don't even have the common curtsey to put their name on the caller ID. Most times it just says, "Florida" or "Nebraska". There are some who put their own subliminal message on the ID like, "Pick UP" or "Accept Accept Accept".

Doesn't matter if I put my name on some national do-not-call list or if I scream at the telemarketer person - they just keep on calling.

I beg you Lords of the Wire, please stop the calling .. please go away and leave me to my misery.

In the video, the bike rider is using a GoPro video camera. I use the Veho Muvi Pro Micro. The Veho's are tanks. I've dropped it - it's fallen off my car and I even launched it in a model rocket. Great cameras.

A long time ago, I was a designer and writer for a small design house called Westwood Associates. It was run by two great designers - Brett Sperry and Louis Castle. Louis was just and incredible programer and designer. He was doing stuff on the Apple IIe that would not be replicated until Doom came out. And Brett had this incredible sense of layout, interface design and organic motion.

On of the first games I worked on was Eye of the Beholder. I was a writer for the clue book on the EOB One and a writer and designer on EOB II.

The second game I worked on was DragonStrike for the NES. This was a top-down shooter and didn't any (other than the name) to do with the Apple IIe flight sim version.

I was a designer for a small NEC Turbographx role playing game called Order of the Griffon.

One of the last games I worked was Dune II for the Amiga and PC. This was the first real RTS to be developed. Brett Sperry came up with the idea after playing a German game called Herzog.

Steve Jobs one of the founders of Apple Computers and the innovator of the iPod and iPhone died yesterday at the age of 56.

This news has spread across the web, like a wildfire. Steve Wozniak Facbook page was flooded with condolences. I'm sure he's been overwhelmed with phone calls and emails asking for a response.

I feel kind of sorry for Woz. It wasn't like he and Jobs remained best friends. For a long time there was only room for one person in Jobs' life and that was Jobs.

It's official; I have the dreaded Elementary School Gunk Face that has been going around my daughter's school. I will spare you the intricate details of the condition, other than saying it feels like I've been hit in the head several times by a rabid monkey wielding a plumber's wrench and a sack of wet flour.

I got another cup of tea and swigged down a couple more Advil. There's no point in going to the doctor and sitting in a room filled with even sicker people. What's the doctor going to do anyway? Now that I'm thinking about it, what do doctors actually do? Can't we just replace them with WebMD? - I kid.

Of course I did check my symptoms on WebMD - just in case it was some kind of exotic tropical disease. I did see the movie Contagion. It seems this particular bug is very common. Viruses are like bad apartment tenants. They come in to your head, invite all their friends for a huge party, thrash the place - knock holes in the wall, pee in the kitchen sink, stain the carpet and then leave in the middle of the night.

Well, I think it's off to bed for another hour or so. I will post another update if my condition changes, but I wouldn't worry - I think the mighty EiMB empire is secure for now.

I'm Pre-sick

I think I caught something from my daughter. I'm not sick; I'm pre-sick. You know that feeling you get right before you become sick.

Your head is kind of swimming and you feel sorta hot all over. It's not actually a bad feeling, kind of euphoric in a way - like being pre-drunk.

However, I've experienced this condition many times before, I know what's in store for me.

If I were on a road trip with my friends, this would be the time that I clapped them on the shoulder and told them goodnight. It wouldn't matter how much they begged or complained. Then I would head on over to the gift shop and purchase that fifteen dollar, one dose bottle of NyQuil. Head on up to my room - take a big swig, turn off the clock and go into a semi-coma for the next eighteen hours.

At my current age and physical condition I don't drink NyQuil or it's older cure-all, a shot of whiskey - so instead I've settled for a nice cup of tea and of couple of Advil.

I drew a nice picture of how I feel - this is me in my pajamas and my well-worn, comforting Star Wars t-shirt. I shall see you all after I am over Elementary School Gunk Face.

During an emergency meeting, he sweeps in with the CFO, both of them casually late as usual. At least this time they had an excuse - they just met with the CEO, who finally stopped worrying about the PR and asked some problematic VPs to resign, which will clear a lot of red tape for us later. We try to bring both of them up to speed on the discussion. We just suffered an attack that compromised important proprietary data. Rolling out any changes to our recent implementation of the relevant systems would require delays we can't afford, so we're talking about increased defenses just to cover our butts from exploits. Rule of law won't be enough if the upstarts nipping at our heels pay some kids to hit a vulnerability.

My boss won't have any of it, though - he thinks we can contain the information. As if nobody's made copies yet! All the technical people shift about uncomfortably, and I try to make the best of it by saying we're probably fine regardless. Everything goes online ASAP and we can ruin the other guys once it's all running smoothly.

He then declares that all our infrastructure is window-dressing compared to the innate protection of his faith. We would be fine not because of all the employees and contractors running the show, but thanks to some mystical seance bullshit that he looks to for guidance and references entirely too often in private conversation. I don't even think it's an organized religion - just vague pagan nonsense with creepy voodoo overtones, like he's the last devotee of a cult from the 70s. I must've been sleep-deprived, because I don't even hesitate to call that a bunch of crap. Ass Hat choked me from across the room.

Originally this story was to be published three years ago in a magazine called Fray. The story even went through several drafts with their editors - Unfortunately the magazine has not published since 2009. I present the rough draft here for your reading pleasure. It is pure fictionalized truth.

There's a deadly karate-ninja attack called, "Monkey Steals a Peach". Here's how it works:

A ninja moves in on hisenemy; he swings his arms wildly in a windmill fashion. Just as the victim raiseshis hands to protect the frantic attack, the ninja drops to his right kneewhile swinging his right arm up between the enemy's legs. The open hand grabsthe exposed genitalia and in one powerful stroke rips the victim’s delicate,precious fruit from his tree.

Ouch – really painful andsomething that not even the great Chuck Norris would have the dark soul toattempt. But at least it’s quick.

What happened to me was muchworse. The attack upon my testicles lasted five hours. It was excruciatinglypainful and devastatingly humiliating. Worse, it happened on the first day ofmy vacation with my new girlfriend.

Like any other guy at theUniversity of Nevada Reno, I maintained a healthy interest in the vulgar anddistasteful. My friends all had their specialties. Basically there were twomain categories: The first was belching. There were ABCer's, beer belchers,bullshit belches, mystery belcher and the food cannon belch.

The second category consistedof students who delved in the dark arts of flatulence casting. There were such techniques as: Poppers,flappers, machine gunners, squealers, SBDers, Servants of the Blue Flame anda guy from Pakistan who upon command released from the confines of his colon a sinfulcloud-like creature that could evacuate the most hardcore frat party.

My specialty was quite specialindeed. I could take the ink tube inside a Bic pen and stick it all the way upmy nose. I'd stick it so far up the whole thing disappeared. It was my thing.The one thing I mastered in life. Better yet, there was this girl named Mazziwho completely dug it, especially when she drank Mickey's Big Mouth. Better yet.. again .. she was a tennis player.

Every party she ran up to meand demanded the pen up the nose trick. I'd do it and she start laughing sohard drool spittled out of her mouth. I don't know why but I found that droolreally sexy. Then at one party instead of me putting a pen up my nose we juststarted making out.

That's how it is in college.It's magical. Paradoxically this was the first mature kind of relationship Ihad with a girl. I wasn't in a big rush. We talked about things. She got bettergrades in calculus and kicked my ass in tennis and I didn't even mind. Shedidn't care that I had two garbage sacks full of underwear in the corner of mydorm room. She would hide my car keys and wouldn't tell me where they were. Wewent on drives for God's sake! And the ultimate, she invited me to her home inCalifornia for the weekend.

Mazzi grew up in a sprawlingranch home near the city of Solvang in Southern California. Solvang is thiscrazy Dutch town, where all the houses look like something out of Hansel andGretel. Around this town are a few industries: Oil drilling, really goodbarbecue ribs, vineyards (movie Sideways was filmed there), flowers and horses.

Horses were what her hippiefather was into. He raised quarter horses and half dollar horses and maybe anickel & dime horse. What do I know about stupid horses? I was playingvideo poker when I was fifteen. Mazzi's father was a Vietnam protester, went toBerkley, had a masters in psychology, smoked pot now and then, was divorcedfrom his second wife and to my reckoning had to be the best girlfriend's fatherI could wish for.

Saturday morning we flewfrom Reno to Santa Barbara. Her father picked us up in an old Ford truck withthe "H" stick shift on steering wheel. As we slid into the frontseat, he reached across Mazzi and grabbed my arm,"You can call meHank". We lumbered our way north and Hank talked about his horses andcursed out his second wife.

"I should of stuck itout with your mother.” he said to Mazzi. “But what the shit do you know whenyou're twenty three?"

She put her head on hisshoulder. "It's okay pop."

We rolled into the graveldriveway, which divided two large pastures speckled with horses. It was clearto an equestrian noob like me the horses thought the truck had come back withfood. They sniffed the ground, then trotted along side the truck until itfinally pulled to a grinding stop in front of the house. Hank jumped out of thetruck and waved at the animals. "There are no carrots or apples for youtoday my fellow citizens, just a boy Mazzi found."

The horses slowly meanderedoff as if they weren't interested in the first place. Mazzi and I grabbed ourbags from the back and followed her father through a large red door into thehouse. The interior was smaller than I expected. It was dark and had a dullsmell of leather oil.

"We only got the twobedrooms. So unless you want to sleep with me, you can share Mazzi's. But youdon't want to sleep in my room do ya?" The hippi father asked me.

I slowly shook my head andthought. No I don’t – that would be the last thing I’d want to do. Mazzihad that look on her face. It was the look you give a beloved dog that farts ata dinner party.

"Shut up pop."She's said, smiling. "You think you're so funny but it's just weird."Mazzi teasingly pushed her father to which he grunted into a laugh then theyboth turned and went into the bedroom.

I'm got this peculiarfeeling. I've known many fathers and there was always turmoil just under thesurface. A strange moment of silence passed, then Mazzi threw her bag on thedusty queen size bed, stretched and announced, "I'm going to clean up abit, then maybe we can grab some lunch?" Her father nodded. Mazzi wentinto the adjoining bathroom and closed the door. Hank looked at me for a longtime, then asked, "What do you know about horses?"

"I know how to bet onthem."

He laughed at that.

"Okay, why don't youcome with me and I'll show you a thing or two about my horses."

"This isn't some kindof strange hippie thing you learned at Berkley?", I asked, but I wasn’treally joking.

Still laughing. "Youwould be surprised at all of the valuable 'hippie' things I learned at Berkley.So come on let's go take a look."

The stables were domedbuildings lined up next to each other. The silhouettes looked like a series ofupside down U's. We entered the stable closest to the house. The curvedroof was made of thick canvas that acted as a skylight. There were sixteenstables, but only two were occupied.

Hank grabbed a saddle andwalked up to a large brown and white horse. "This horse is my friend. Hisname is Horatio," Hank said. He opened the gate and led the horse out tothe middle of the stable, then ran his hands along both of the horse's flanks."It's easy talking to horse like this, but you got to have anunderstanding of the animal."

Hank carefully lifted eachleg and checked the hooves. "You see horses live and die by their nature.Like the Almighty, they're the same yesterday, today and forever." Hankput on leather gloves, grabbed the worn saddle from the stable railing andthrew it on back of Horatio. Hank tightened the girth of the saddle around thehorse and made sure it was tight but not too tight.

"What are you doingHank?" I was getting a little concerned. In truth, I'm a bit afraid ofhorses. They're big animals with small brains and I have a policy of stayingaway from creatures any bigger than a guinea pig.

"Hold this." Hank handedme the reins. Without thinking I grabbed the reins and Hank walked over to anadjacent stable.

"Hank, I'm not reallycomfortable with your horse. Maybe we could go back inside and see if Mazzi isready for lunch?" I almost pleaded.

"Don't worry aboutMazzi; she's fine. This is just you and me now." Hank opened the stableand walked out a smaller gray horse. "This is Ophelia. She is beautiful;don't you think?" I nodded, while looking around for somewhere to tie offHoratio. "She's smart as well," Hank said, running his hands alongher sides. "Has a mind all her own." Hank checked each hoof, thenplaced a saddle on Ophelia.

"Follow mecitizens," Hank ordered, as he walked Ophelia out of the stable. I don'tknow if he was talking to me or the horse, but it hardly mattered. Horatiosnorted then followed Hank out, dragging me along with him. We walked thehorses a couple hundred yards into a small pasture.

"Do you know how tomount a horse?" Hank asked.

I blurted out, "That'swhat she said .."

Hank laughed, then gotserious. "I take that as a no. Well, first stand on the left side ofHoratio."

"I'm not riding yourhorse Hank." I interrupted. "How about you put them away and we gohave some lunch? Hey, how about I take you both to lunch? My treat." I'mvery nervous now and scared. My legs are kind of weak.

"This is not a bigdeal. We're just going for a short ride, then we can eat," He saidimpatiently. "Besides, you know Mazzi is going to want to see you ride andyou don't want to try this for the first time in front of her?"

He had a point. I didn'twant to look like a complete dork in front of her. "A short rideokay?" Hank nodded. "No running right?" Hank nodded. "Nojumping right?" Hank nodded. "No going through trees. I've seenmovies where a guy gets his head taken off by a low limb."

Hank grimaced. "Justget on the fucking horse."

Hank gave me all theinstructions for mounting and I have to say I didn't do a bad job, except as Iswung my right leg over I kept it straight out and for a moment looked like aFrench cabaret dancer.

As soon as I was on Horatio,the horse started to walk off. "Stop horse ... okay let's stop", Ibegged. Horatio ignored me and began walking toward the stables. Hank mountedOphelia, then barked a short "Whoa" which immediately stopped thehorse.

"Son, you need to talkin a language Horatio can understand." Hank rode up next to me. "Ifyou want the horse to go forward, squeeze your legs. When you want to stop pullon the reins, sit deep in the saddle and command "whoa" in a deepvoice." Hank gave a short demonstration on Ophelia. "Okay, I thinkyou're ready. Horatio will follow me. You just remember not to be nervous andsit with confidence. Got it?"

"I guess?" I triedto sit as confidently as I could on Horatio. "Where are we going?"

"Where ever we needto." He answered cryptically and then made a clicking sound and Opheliawas off with Horatio following.

Hank guided Ophelia to theback pasture, then through an opening in an old stone wall, across an oily,gravel road and into a small vineyard. He turned his horse ninety degrees andslowed down until Horatio caught up. Rolling his hand over the landscape, Hanksaid, "This was the first property purchased by the old Firestone familyback in the late sixties, but it was too small for them." He sniffed theair. "They ended up purchasing five hundred acres near the town of LosOlivos, even though the land here is better for grapes." He looked at mehard. "I guess the family desired quantity over quality. You can't haveboth."

As we rode for anotherthirty minutes along the vineyard, I began to notice a bit of chaffing along myinner thighs. It was like warm embers leading to my groin and I also noticed myass was getting just a bit tender.

We reached the end of thevineyard and stood before an open expanse of scrub land that extended to afuzzy brown mesa.

I broke the silence."Hank this was just great. I had a really great time. Let's go back andget some lunch." I tried to turn my horse but Horatio would not budge.

"Not just yet, there'ssomething I want to show you." He made that clicking sound again andOphelia started forward. I sat deep in the saddle and pulled the reins."Where Hank?" I looked all around. "I've seen plenty of deadplants before. We have loads of them in Las Vegas."

Hank laughed. "No .. no.. it's not here. Just a little bit further. This is special." Hank wasoff into the scrub and Horatio followed no matter how deep in the saddle I sat.

After an hour and a half ofhard riding through ravines and gullies, the warm embers near my groin hadignited and were a fire deep inside testicles and it felt like a rabid monkey washitting my ass with a plumber's wrench.

"How much furtherHank?" I cried.

"Not much more,"Hand shouted back. "Just at the foot of the mesa."

About fifteen minutes laterwe reached a small oasis surrounded by gray brush. A lone cedar tree stoodbeside a small creek. Hank jumped off Ophelia and tied both horses to the tree,then he helped me fall off Horatio. As soon as my numb feet hit the ground, Ifell face first into the wild grass. As I lay in a near fetal position.

Hank said, "Mazzi's momand I planted this tree." He tapped the trunk. "We were kind of likeJohnny and Jane Appleseed of Santa Barbara." Hank sat beside me. "Itwas free times back then. We planned to setup a commune here. I was practicingTranscendental Meditation and she was into natural remedies and medicines. Itwas going to be a life of peace and harmony with nature."

I turned over and grunted,"Can we go back now, please? I need a handful of aspirin."

Hank ignored me. "Thenshe got pregnant with Mazzi and we ran short of money. I got a job as a schoolcounselor and she went back to nursing. She was offered a position in LosAngeles as head nurse for City of Hope and I didn't want to move. So, we brokeup and she took Mazzi."

"If she took Mazzi, howdid you end up taking care of her?" I asked.

"When Mazzi was seven,her mom was killed by a drunk driver and she came back to live with me.”

Hank sat staring into thecreek, picking the grass and throwing it into the water. "See it is thegreat joke of the universe that we succeed and fail by our nature. Our headstell us one thing and our hearts another. My head tells me that Mazzi is awoman and can make her own decisions in life. My heart tells me she is still mylittle girl. Which do I listen to?"

I gingerly sat up and withall the empathy I could muster said, "Hank, I frankly don't give a shit.Can we please go back?"

Hank breathed in deeply,which seemed to clear whatever dream he was stuck in. "Yes, you're right.Let's go back and get something to eat. We're all hungry."

Hank helped me back ontoHoratio, untied the reins. grabbed the bridle and pulled the horse's face closeto his own. "What do you say soldier? Are you ready for some nice, freshhay?" Horatio grunted and stamped the ground. "How about some carrotsand an apple would you like those?" The large horse bucked a bit andslather dripped out of his mouth. "Well, you know the way home; don't yabig boy?" Hank let go of the bridle and Horatio launched like rocket.

Horatio was a tremendousanimal. He weighed close to 1,400 pounds and could run nearly thirty five milesan hour. He was bred and trained as a western horse and was used to coveringfive yards of rough terrain in one stride . His mind was set upon the singlethought of food.

Here is the sound as best Ican describe it. "Badadum Badadum Badadum" played out in a fastAfro-Caribbean rhythm. The "Ba" part was my ass being propelled upinto the air by the saddle. "da" was my body smashing back down onthe horse and "dum" are my testicles, lower intestines, kidneys andliver smashed into my stomach, lungs and heart. Just repeat this over and overagain as fast as you can say it and you get some idea of what this ride waslike. I tried pulling on the reins and commanding, in a low voice,"whoa". It didn't work and after each consecutive ass smashing, myvoice became higher and higher until it was a kind of Mickey Mouse shrill.

The only relief was standingin the stirrups so that there was so much space between my croch and the saddlethat one could kick a soccer ball between my legs, but the strain was toogreat.

Slowly, like a ship sinkinginto the sea, my ass lowered back into the saddle. My brain and other vitalorgans pleaded with my legs to hold on, but will power alone could notwithstand the up and down motion. It started with a gently tapping of thesaddle on my backside, like a maid taping on the door to see if you're awake.Then the tapping increased to a firm knock, like the manager checking on theroom. The knocking turned into a fervent pounding of police demanding the doorbe opened. Finally, the swat team just broke the door down and beat the shitout of everyone inside.

I was crying; a cry filledwith pain and misery. I hated that horse.

Finally I just gabbed thehorse’s neck, closed my eyes and waited to die.

I must have blacked out ormaybe I’m just repressing the memory but the next thing I knew I was back inthe stable. Horatio was happily eating fresh hay and Hank was putting Opheliain her stable. I looked over and there was Mazzi with her hands on her hips."What the fuck did you do to him Dad?"

Hank shrugged."Nothing, we went for a bit of ride while you took a shower."

"You've been gone forfive hours!"

I was laying on the back ofHoratio blurting out short little cries. Mazzi walked over and put her hand onmy shoulder. "Are you okay?"

I raised my head a bit andpleaded, "Kill me. Please kill me quickly." Mazzi turned on herfather. "What the fuck? You knew he never ridden before."

"Oh come on," Hanksaid. "It's not as bad as it looks. Help me get him inside."

"Do it yourself. Thanksfor ruining my vacation." Mazzi stormed off into the house. Hank scoopedme off the horse and held my arm as we made our way back to the house. Iimagined I looked like a chimpanzee with my knees bent, dragging my knuckles onthe dirt and walking in a knee to toe type fashion.

That night I sat on thecouch with my pants down. Bags of ice covered my black and blue legs andpelvis. I was given three Vicodin by the family doctor that lived down thestreet and sat like a zombie watching Cheers. Mazzi sat on a kitchen chair,arms folded, staring death rays at her father and Hank sat in his old leatherchair, smoking his pipe with a small smile on his face.

I had a conversation last evening that has me pondering how my life will end up. Will I eventually mature enough to be like that guy on the Dos Equis commercial? .. you know - The Most Interesting Man in the World.

"I don't play World of Warcraft often, but when I do - play a small female gnome named Butter Pants."

Or will I end up a trollish little man with wrinkled skin who smells like pickled potatoes?

I've been giving this some thought and I bet I'll be the guy running buck-naked through the streets of Las Vegas, covered only in the hair that grows in places I never wanted it to. I'll be the Anti-Lady Godiva.

My sensitive private parts covered only by the wisps of my ear hair as I run along on my cankered, old bunion feet - screeching, "Show me to the buffet."

Which brings me to my second point - is it any more unsanitary to eat at a buffet naked? It shouldn't be really, but some how it is. I mean other than being accidentally smacked by something that wiggles or waggles. Believe me the older you get the more things loosen up down under.

But other than that .. I just would not be comfortable standing next to naked people buttering up crab legs. - just saying.

I don't much care for 911 ceremonies. It has nothing to do with the brave men and women who gave their lives to save or protect. I can't stand how politicians have literally knocked over police, firefighters and soldiers to stand in front of the line of mourners.

I am continually and forever grateful to the common American who serves our country and to those who gave their lives protecting us.

Marc the Fool

Lately, I've been getting that feeling I need to be more serious. I don't know what it is? It's kind of self-conscious meets fear of failure. Usually I'm not afraid of taking risks.

But every once in while - doubt and perfectionism creep in. I start to dread the snark of others. I feel like people are watching what I'm doing - ready to judge and criticize me. I just imagine one of my old classmates saying, "Oh God, did you see the picture he posted on Facebook or I can't believe how stupid that story was."

"In fact, psychologists use the term “imaginary audience” to describe this heightened state of vigilance that is especially strong during adolescence. An imaginary audience is this belief that we have a group or followers that are watching, dissecting, and judging our every move. But the keyword here is “imagined.”

You are not the center of the universe. Nobody really cares about your every move. Nobody is watching, and if they happen to be, they are far less concerned with what you are doing and much more focused on what YOU are thinking about them. That’s the irony of this. You think you are so important that everyone cares what you do, when in fact, everyone is so preoccupied with themselves that they don’t even notice or care what you are doing. - Pick the Brain

I'm sure there's some evolutionary / survival purpose for this feeling, but it certainly gets in the way of experimenting or trying new stuff.

I hate those experts who tell you just to trudge on - fake it till you make it. That seems like a dime's worth of advice to solve a dollar's worth of problems. Usually for me, this feeling stems from something much deeper. Most times there's something more substantial that is shaking my security and making me feel more exposed and less safe. This carries over to my creativity. Makes me just want to shut down and give up.

It's dealing with these bigger issues that I have a problem with.

Bill Kunkel is Dead

One of the great things about living my life is that I've met some of the most interesting and unique people in this world. And no one was more original than Bill Kunkel.

Kunkel was into video games before anyone I knew. He'd been doing it for like ten years when I got into the industry in the late 80's. He was part of KKW - Katz, Kunkel Worley Inc. Arnie Katz, Bill Kunkel and Joyce Worley were game designers and writers. They built this kind of magical world inside this small house in Las Vegas.

A Bill Kunkel Story - Mike Legg (Petroglyph Games), Bill Kunkel and I were at Louis Castle's(EA, Zynga) house. Louis and his wife Donna had these incredible Christmas parties. It was getting toward the end and Mike, Bill and I were just sitting on the floor talking, next to this enormous Christmas tree.

I remember that Bill wasn't paying attention to what were talking about. He kept looking up at the tree.

Finally I had to ask. "What's wrong Bill? You seem distracted."

Bill didn't answer. He just pointed to the top.

Donna had put this little animatronic angel in place of the star on the tree. It was dressed in white robes holding a small lit candled that illuminated its cherub face. The angel methodically swayed back and forth waving the candle in a slow-motion figure eight. Over and over again.

Bill said something to the affect that the little creature was freaking him out and I think Mike Legg named it, the White Angel. The whole conversation turned to speaking about the White Angel. In our minds, it no longer was a cute, little Christmas ornament. But a small, impish creature perched on top of the tree, scanning for its next victim.

We even had this movie intro voice for it - you have to say it like Tiny Tim and draw it out. -- The White Angel .. The White Angel.

It was so good it was evil.

The conversation expanded to other small, evil creatures and that's the start of the infamous LEM's - Little Evil Men.

Finally, Bill got so freaked out by the whole thing he had to leave and I don't think Christmas was ever the same for him.

Bill Kunkel died on Sunday night of an apparent heart attack. I'm shocked and stunned. I get this strange dread when people like Bill die - usually whole eras end with them.

I think the toughest thing now for Bill is to choose between video game heaven and wrestler's heaven. I think I know which one he chose.

(This was a long time ago - so my memory is a bit rough on the events and if you've been to any of the Castle parties you have a hard time remembering what happened the day after)

What the Telemarketer Heard

Last night I killed my computer. I was playing a little World of Warcraft when a telemarketer called. Now I have MS, which causes this condition called "Startle Reflex". Basically, I jump out of my skin at any loud noises.

I just finished talking to a friend and placed the phone back onto the receiver when it immediately started ringing. For some reason, this startled me and my hand flung to the side knocking the phone off the hook and flinging a full can of diet Dr. Pepper off the table and onto the top of my computer.

It was a perfect shot. The can was completely upside down over the top fan, wedged between two plastic rims. About 8 oz of soda, drained into the fan. The fan sprayed the liquid all over the motherboard, until it shorted out. The liquid then poured into and out of the CPU, then across the memory and the video card and finally pooling in the power supply.

There was a shrill beep, some sparks and smoke and that was it. By the time, I got out of my chair and to the computer it was dead.

The phone was off the hook and the telemarketer heard the whole thing. This is the event from the telemarketer's perspective:

(Another large bang)
Me: "Fudge .. oh my God .. oh Fudge, Fudge, Fudge .. Fudge, Shucks, Fudge"
Telemarketer: Hello .. Hello ..
(There is another large bang, as I am trying to quickly get up from my chair to the computer)
Telemarketer: Hello - may I speak with ..
Me: Oh my God, what have I fudgein' done. Are you alright baby?"
Telemarketer: "Hello, is everything okay?"
Me: "Come on baby, fudging speak to me. Please .. please .. don't fudging do this. God, shucks darn it, I think I killed you."
Telemarketer: "Sir, are you there?"
Me: "God darn it. How could I've been so stupid? I didn't mean it baby, please be okay." (another bang as I tip the computer over, diet Dr. Pepper pours out all over the floor) "Shucks, Fudge, Muther Fudger, I've stained the whole fudging carpet. Now, I've done it. The whole fudging carpet is fudging ruined. How am going to get that fudging stain out?"
Telemarketer: "Ah sir."
Me: "Fudge, this is just fudging perfect. I can't pay for this man."
(I notice the phone off the hook and remember it was the call that caused this whole thing to happen. I grab the receiver.)
Me: "Who the fudge is this?"
Telemarketer: "Is everything okay."
Me: "No, everything isn't fudging okay. She's dead and it's your fault. What's your fudging name?"

CLICK.

I went to Fry's Electronics this morning and replaced almost all of the components to my computer. Fortunately, the hard drives were not damaged.

Starz's Netflix Contract To Expire February 2012, Taking Over 1,000 Movies With It

This is the time period where everyone gets crazy, uber-greedy again and thinks they can do it on their own. Some marketing guy at Starz is trying to explain a monthly revenue model for a 1,000 movies. Sony has dropped seventh graders as their security programers and gone with trained squirrels. Microsoft is trying to show movies in Excel on a Smartphone running Win7. They all think they can do it better and make more money without Netflix or Apple or RedBox.

AT&T Justice Department Battle: Wireless Carrier Gears Up For Rare Antitrust Fight With DOJ

I was not surprised by this ruling one bit. There are really only two major competitors - AT&T and Verizon with two minor players - T-Mobile and Sprint. Which means there really is no competition in the market as it is now.

That is not to say that I don't feel AT&T's pain. They have to expand their pipes in order to keep up with the technology and competition. T-Mobile would have given AT&T the room to grow.

I think that AT&T needs to think outside the box on this one. There must be a way to obtain the needed bandwidth and infrastructure without a take-over. I think they should present the government a number of different plans and say, "since you will not let us grow, what will you let us do?"

I wake up early, because it's already 100 degrees outside and the air conditioning is having a hard time keeping up. I turn on the computer, wait for it to boot - let all the useless programs load into my task bar.

I pop open a Diet Coke for breakfast and look at my iPhone. I don't know why. Back to my computer - email has just popped up.

I wonder if the dreamers of the future in the 70's and 80's ever imagine that with the invention of such wonderful technology we would spend most of our morning scrolling through Ebay Daily Deals and TigerDirect contests.

Something starts clanking around in my computer and for a moment I wish the whole thing would just die.

- I hate when people use "loan" as a verb - like - "Loan me the money." It's "lend" you fool.

- I hate people who "wingman" me for six miles on the freeway.

- I hate that there's no warning label of extreme flatulence on Fiber One cereal boxes.

- I hate that one McFish sandwich in the refiderator will make everything smell like McFish.

- I hate when a person I've seen a few times and clearly recognizes me, pretends they don't.

- I hate people who think that all my problems stem because I don't pray.

- I hate when men use the base of a cold beer bottle to cool their testicles, thus giving the impression the bottle is now their penis.

- I hate that everyone thinks that Harry Potter is all that and don't realize it's just a derivation of "The Once and Future King ", which is a vastly superior book.

Although Skyrim is a straight RPG this has got to be where MMO's are headed. I mean the graphics in World of Warcraft have held up over the years, mainly because it uses a cartoonish style. But the jagged, pixelated tree branches and the blockish terrain is getting very dated. I don't see how I could go backs to such simple and blurry graphics after playing Skyrim. Blizzard has got to make some fundamental changes.

I have a Canon EOS Rebel T2i DSLR and I love it. It's a semi-pro camera. Captures at18mp and 1080i video. I couldn't be more happy with a camera.

But there are times when I have to go back to film. There's just something about the chemical reaction of photons hitting the silver halide salts, that gives you a whole different picture than you would have gotten using a digital camera.

I have an Olympus OM-1, but usually when I go on a road trip or out shooting for the day I just throw in one of my Lomography camera. One of my favorite is the Lomography Fisheye 35mm Camera It's easy to load and the lens is fixed - and plastic. Fisheye gives a whole new perspective (literally) of the world. Here are some pictures I took with my Fisheye.

Sierra Mountain Road Trip

My life is under construction for the present time. Here are some random pictures from the road trip I took. There are quite a few interesting stories. Being stalked by Marines training in the mountains was one interesting thing that happened.

Only saw one single wild horse. Used to see bands of wild horses and burrows on my way to UNR from Las Vegas. They're all gone now - sold as meat. You can thank our Former Republican Governor, Jim Gibbons, who sold off Nevada's natural treasure for a few bucks in his pocket.

This was the same ass-hat who beat up a cocktail waitress and threw his wife out of the governor's mansion because he had a new girlfriend. Our new governor, Brian Sandoval, also a Republican, seems to be much more friendly to Nevada's wildlife.

I think we should all get used to the fact that human exploration of space is many, many years away. My guess is no less than 50 years. It's not NASA's fault .. there are three major obstacles.

1) living in a small, close system for years will drive people crazy.
2) The amount of energy it takes to send, explore and return from anything beyond the moon is mind boggling.
3) The radiation in space is deadly and particles (and larger) zip through the spaceship and the astronauts like a laser beam on a cloudy night. Shielding technology just doesn't exist yet.

Robots are perfect for space travel. They don't get lonely, they don't have squishy parts and they don't have to get back home.

Clown Motel - The Movie

I just got home from the road trip to my Aunt and Uncle's. I thought before I crash for the night, I would share the single scariest thing I saw on my trip through the high desert.

The Clown Motel on the edge of Tonopah Nevada.

Living in Las Vegas, I have a few clown friends and I mean absolutely no offense. They are the funny, amusing, talented clowns. They bring happiness to the lives of children and those young at heart. Love those kind of clowns. I'm talking about the horror movie clowns .. the ones Stephen King writes about.

The Clown Motel is just like those motels you see in the movies. Tell me what child want to sleep with a clown? Remember the movie Poltergeist? And this isn't like Circus Circus, this is smack in the middle of scrub country.

If my father after driving hours through the desert and it was twilight with the lightning in the sky - pulled up to the Clown Motel and said, "Hey, kids let's stay here for the night while the storm passes."

I'd give him the middle finger.. not just no, but hell no .. I'd rather sleep on top of the rusty tractor near the town's cemetery than with a whole bunch of clowns with room keys,

I took many more pictures, including of few of lone wild stallion near the Sierra Nevada mountains. I will post all these tomorrow if I get the chance.

Tonopah Oasis

Don't think they're grizzlies in Tonopah.

Decided that my life was enough - Under Construction - to go on another road trip. Left Vegas around 5pm, which was little too late, so I decided to stop in Tonopah Ramada Inn. I can't imagine this place has changed much in the last thirty years.

I put a few bucks though a slot machine, decided to cash out with around five bucks and then realized there was no TiTo - Ticket in / Ticket out. With no ticket system, I had to wait on a hand pay. They guy was pretty cool. Found out he was an MMA - or so he claims. He did have the knuckles to prove it though.

So, going to wake up early in the morning and try to make it through Reno.

This video is not particularly funny. I mean it's okay. The reason I post it here is because of the CG title that appears at the start - "What Happens when you WERE a wetsuit."

Now I can't get this out of my brain. I mean it's obvious it was meant to be "wear" not "were" and this isn't some post exposing the horrible grammar of the Internet. We are all guilty of our syntax sins.

This is about how the whole context of the video changes with the title. Actually, sliding down a roof slide isn't what happens when you wear a wetsuit. Is it?

Sunday Advice

Never try to be the best.

There is only one person who is the best and everyone else who isn't - which makes one person happy and all the rest miserable and even the person who is the best isn't really happy because one can never stay the best at anything forever.

Don't even try to be the best that you can be. This is even worse than trying to be the best, because you're being condescending to yourself. What does that even mean? Like there is some potential BEST you out there.

If you must play these silly games, then just try to be a little above average. Even that doesn't bring happiness because it makes some determination about people around you and your status among them.

Here's what I'm saying. Don't compete - really just drop the whole thing altogether from your life. Sure play sports and keep score, but the competition ends when the game is over.

Here's what I want you to do. Just sit back - are you sitting back in your chair? Okay, are you ready? Wake up! Really - just wake up from the system. Remove yourself from the system.

This post is not going to disrespect the police. This post is about consumerism and obedience to the social structure.

It's my belief that we are slowly falling asleep and in this sleep we are cleansing all memory of what it meant to be awake and alive. When I saw this video, I wondered what is society trying to stop?

When the policewoman says, "We don't know what is in the lemonade." I'm thinking either you just don't understand the concept of lemons, water and sugar mixed together or you're inferring that there's something nefarious with these three girls. My question is - how the hell do you know what's in that powdered lemonade you buy at the grocery store? Have you looked at the ingredients? Which is probably more safe to consume?

I don't think the main motivation here is protecting consumers. I think the motivation is to insure complete obedience to the system. Understand the police were not responding to a complaint, but were driving by when they saw the lemonade stand. They had the option of just ignoring it. Why did they respond? What was it in them that made them divert from the easier path of just driving away?

The lemonade stand must have been some kind of threat to their authority. The social structure of the the guards and those who are guarded was disturbed. This was independence. This was going around the system. And there is only one system. The system says you are to be an employee and you are to used what you make for money to buy stuff.

To play by the rules, would require the children to pay $150 for the license and $50 a day in fees. Which means it's impossible for them to make any profit on the lemonade stand.

They could always give the lemonade away for free and ask for a gift of the price of the lemonade. But once again, we are telling our children that in order to be free and independent you have to cheat.

This is what really scares me about the trajectory of America. That there is no way, unless you are fully compliant with the system to survive, let alone thrive.

Agnostic View of Inteligent Design

I've been reading lately that some Christians want Intelligent Design taught in public schools. Now, I'm an Agnostic meaning that I lack the gift of faith. As the Boston used to sing, it takes "More than a Feeling" for me to believe something.

I'm not going to get into if Intelligent Design is real. ( hereafter called ID). However, if we're going to teach ID in science class, then ID must follow all the rules and processes of any other science topic

The students should theorectically be able to recreate life in their lab .. Religious scientists need to explain the engineering behind it .. so that the student can establish experimentation to replicate the "God Creative Process".

1. What are the exact powers of the Intelligent Designer? Can the IDer just snap His fingers and anything can happen or does the IDer have to follow the rules of the universe?

     A) How does these powers works?
     B) How did the IDer obtain the powers?
     C) Has the powers remained the same or does the IDer learn new stuff?

2. Why did the IDer create the Universe? Did the IDer just create it then leave the universe to develop on its own or does the ID take an active roll. If so, then what things has the ID directly done and how did the ID do it?

     A) How old is the IDer?
     B) Is there more than one IDer?
     C) How long will the IDer be in existence?
     D) What happens to the IDer when the universe fades?
     F) How old is the universe? How old is the Earth? How old are humans?

3. Is the ID a creator, interferer or modifier .. or a combination of the three. Please explain exactly what the ID had done.

     A) What exactly has the IDer created from scratch?
     B) When has the IDer changed or modified a design? Exactly how did He accomplish this?
     C) Has the creator ever stopped the progression of a design?

4. Show what particular ID element that can be replicated and/or tested and measured.

     A) What experiment can a student do to prove the existence of ID?
     B) What is the mathematical or chemical theory behind ID? Specifics ..

5. What tools or technology does the ID uses?

A) Did the IDer use any tools or technology to create His designs?
    B) What was the source of power to create the designs?
    C) How did the IDer remember how to do the designs. Are the designs written down?

6. Make prediction of what the ID will do in the future. Show the process of those prediction - in other words something more logical than "The Bible says it's going to happen."

If these guys can't answer these questions, what really will the class material consist of - other than just reading passages from the Bible. You need more than just a statement .. science is meant to be explored, questioned and analyzed.

How Netflix Alienated Its Customers And Became Less Popular Than Blockbuster In Two Weeks

If you look at the new Netflix price range it's not that unfair - take too long to explain why. However, how it was implemented was one of the worst fiascoes I think I've ever seen. This will be taught in colleges as what-never-to-do. People at Netflix need to be fired.

If you're going to make such a dramatic change like this, you've got to implement it over eight months to year. And you better have a really spot-on migration plan. Really Netflix you send a letter .. a letter? I would have purchased some commercial time and put a video on the Netflix site from the CEO, saying simply -

We are at the mercy of the content providers and they have decided to drain us of our money. Over the next year, we will be forced to make tough choices but our commitment is to our customers. We will do everything we can to stabilize costs and monthly charges. However, because of the current environment there will be changes.

Prepare your customers. Get the thought into their minds. And start pointing that finger of blame, so that when it hits, they're anger is at Fox and Sony and not at you. Also prepare a migration plan. There must be value added stuff you can give customer for choosing to stay. As I'm typing this, I've thought of about a dozen and half of them don't cost Netflix any more money.

Which brings me to my last point, Netflix if you ever find yourself in this situation again, for a few hundred bucks I can save you from ruining your reputation. Really, I've done this stuff before and I can help - I'm here to help and to heal. Also, because I'm semi-retired, I'm cheap .. really cheap ... like let's talk free three year contract in exchange for saving company cheap. Just saying ..

The fantastic website Boing Boing is reporting that Elvis was spotted in England robbing stores with a fake handgun. I can assure you that Elvis would never us a fake handgun. Elvis carried two very real gold and nickel plated Smith & Wesson 357 magnum revolvers.

When Kennedy dreamed of space .. we went to the moon, when Reagan dreamed we orbited a flying bus around earth a few times. Sunday Advice - Friday News is Bad New

There's Friday Foto and now I am starting a new theme day, called Sunday Advice. This is where I, the great and mighty Kmuzu tell you what to do. - I know it's now Monday, but only by a little. And like Friday, I'm too lazy to create a logo .. so this will have to do.

Sunday Advice

This advice concerns people delivering news. Almost always at the office or with people you see every day this is the standard protocol - The same is almost always true with politics as well, but for different reasons.

Good news is delivered on Monday or Tuesday and Bad news is delivered on Friday.

Here's why it happens and why it's important for you to know.

If a boss gives you bad news on Friday - for instance, informing you that you're fired, then it's usually too late for you to initiate any kind of defense or reaction. Everyone is preparing for the weekend. Human resources is gone and quite frankly no one wants to get involved in such a commitment of time and energy when they know they're going to be on the lake in twelve hours. Also, employees usually get paid on Friday and so it's an easy accounting cut-off.

By the time the weekend is over and Monday starts, all the momentum is lost - momentum is key - something I might write about in my next Sunday Advice.

Good news is delivered early in the week, because a business wants you to spread around the good news. It builds moral and confidence in a company when an employee gets Employee of the Month. And bosses, who have delicate but hungry egos, love to hear the praise all week long.

Here's why you need to know this - If you sense something is going wrong with your boss or with the company, and you have any suspicion that it might be the end for you, then Friday morning call in sick. Sometimes, a boss is not smart enough to hold his cards close to his chest and he might say something like we need to talk on Friday.

If you can, call it into human resources and really play it up. Now this isn't the time to go on vacation or to spend the whole day at the bar watching a baseball game. Stay at home, watch television or surf the web.

If it's really bad news, your boss will call and ask when you're going to be back. My advice is to be vague, but leave open the possibility that you'll be back on Monday. Make sure the conversation is short - say you're thinking about going to the doctor. Then on Monday call in sick.

Remember how I talked about momentum - well you just took all the momentum out of firing you. Usually mid-level bosses have to get approval from HR to fire and hire. And usually, they were too lazy to keep all the records and do all the due diligence. HR likes to have all the paperwork and notes kept the way the want it and they spend many hours training mangers on how to do this and most mangers ignore them. So, in order to get you fired, he/she had to go in and convince HR that it was important to let you go without any of those warning, performance reviews, or performance plans in place. This made HR angry.

Because you did not come in on Friday (and Monday) your manager has to go back into HR and to accounting. HR is going to gripe and complain that the manger can't do anything by the book and accounting's got to redo the whole payroll. It's just a mess.

All of this means, that your manager might just drop the whole thing because it's not worth the hassle. I've seen it happen before. One more thing, when you come back, stop off at HR first and just kind of inform them that you are feeling a bit better and thank them for helping out.

Just my little tip for you to be happy ..

This is just my opinion - I am NOT a lawyer or someone that has any experience in anything whatsoever. As a matter of fact, you're probably better off not doing anything I say.
